In need of motivation

Tuesday, March 1, 2011

Hello there,

So I have been desperately trying to get motivation to work on my fitness (you know how hard it is girlies). I am hoping to run the Lewa Marathon in June and the Standard Chartered Half Marathon in October...this requires frequent running and loads and loads of cardio work. We were able to run the 10K last year but the novelty of running has now worn off..What next?

I have tried running in the morning at 6am this was good the first day, but getting up the 2nd day was quite the challenge. Running in the evening is ideal but I get home, change into my dira (somali dress) then hang out.I love running and really got into it when training for the run, I absolutely adore how I feel after a run..its just the up and getting out of the house that is proving to be difficult.

Since I was running last year, I managed to lose a few kilograms but I can slowly feel them creeping back on...Scary stuff! My body is the kind to gain weight on the tummy area and thighs....I would say that my body double (except taller and prettier) is Angela Simmons. My thighs have always had a close relationship read, Thunder Thighs

I really want to get fit for the marathon and also lose a few kilos..make it to 60kgs. Any ideas how to get motivated, what helps you get up and go to the gym, running, walking? Please share because I am at my wits end.

Madam....first of all, you as gorgeous, if not even gorgeouser(as I contribute to the English language) than miss Simmons above!! Fur realz!! You have this captivating quality about you (No homo :-D)!!!

Second, please share those motivation tips as soon as you get them because that's my Achilles heel right there!! And mine is horrid, I can't even muster the syke to sit on my exercise bike and cycle for just 10 mins and the damn thing is right by my bed, let alone get up and go for a power walk.

A friend of mine has recently lost a ton of weight through religiously abiding by her work out DVDs at home, running once a week for 30-45 mins at The Arboretum and without a major change in diet. She's an inspiration.

Maybe I need some hypnosis of some kind to get me into a good working out habit! I've gained 13.5kgs in the last year. Eeeeiiikkkk!!!

I sooo know how this feels!!! I'm training for my 3rd half marathon which will be this march in Dallas, Tx.I'm running a full in December!! Don't lose motivation girlie! Hang in there..you can do it!! My food addiction has meant when I sit my tummy rolls up and my thighs are in constant contact...its ok though coz I know Rick Ross wasn't built in a day! I have time to shed those pounds!! :)

Isnt this like all our problem. In my head i see myself jogging even almost everyday but getting up to actually do it is so hard. Ive tries itonce or twice but not long enough to see any results. Only exercise i get is walking around but i want more. We should do something .maybe commit to once a week,

I woke up yesterday morning feeling very overwhelmed with the world and all, that intense feeling all you can do is just run!!! so i put on some freshly ground - i'd like (great great song, you just put it on replay, sing along, out of tune, who cares), put on my running shoes and ran till that fist around my heart slackened :)...yeah i know you can't do this on a regular but what am basically suggesting is putting on some upbeat music when u wake up, jams that make you just want to go and shake it off.

@Mbabazi..maybe a challenge is due y'all! I know its very evident that in my head I should be running..perfect wording for this is..My minds telling me yes..but my body,my bodys telling me NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. We should defo do an exercise challenge yes?
@Sugarpuss..I have such good intentions even downloading workout music but its all put to no use..I shall run tomorrow not today because I have a meeting (yes?) but tomorrow..Thursday 3rd March

@Mbabazi, I was gonna get the DVDs from her.....once I do I'll let you know their name and all.

A challenge sounds like a super way to go...and for motivation...I say we set goals, rewards, a wager of some sort, I don't know...anything that can banish those excuses that so conveniently come up so convincingly!!

And sadly, I can't run, busted my knee a few years ago....yeah, I was doing something super athletic...like fainting and tearing my patella tendon as I fell.

Yup yup.

@Sugarpuss.....sigh...sounds so NICE!!!!!

I can't run at the moment for various reasons - my trainers are broke down and I don't want to mess up my knees and ankles (which are terrible). Also, I hate the idea of people looking at me when I run by myself, so I can only run in the early morning. I'm going to get my knees checked out by the doctor and just get over people looking at me.
But for other people who feel that familiar hesitancy concerning running or exercise in general, I'd advise you to read this: http://bangsandabun.com/2011/02/so-whats-stopping-you/
And if that doesn't motivate you, there are literally a zillion and one way to keep your heart healthy: Dance (Ballet, Jazz, Belly, Zumba, Salsa, Contemporary, Hip Hop/Street, Tap), Parkour and Free Running, Roller Skating, Hula Hooping, Yoga, Pilates, Walking, Rambling, Biking, Kick-boxing, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido...etc :)

Okay. I'll get off my high horse and shut up now!

I thoroughly miss running. I used to think i couldnt run to save my life but i went from running for 5 mins on the treadmill to abt 1 hour after abt a year. Not sure how far i'd run right now,its been abt 2 yrs since i seriously ran-blame it on my beau, that & the extra pounds i've gained-but i still nostalgically remember the feeling it gave me when i realized i could run that long, that we can really do anything we put our minds to.Not forgetting the feeling of being in "the zone" that i acheived a number of times...#purebliss. That alone makes me want to go outside & run right now in the hopes of getting this runners high(this zen must be what it feels to get high). Please keep us posted on motivation tips,i think i just talked myself into going to the gym right now but not sure how long this syke will last..cheers.

I learned a valuable lesson this year, and I'm telling everyone who has a minute. The key is to focus on developing fitness into a lifestyle habit, rather than on losing a certain amount of weight/inches or even on a goal like a marathon. The short-term goals are great, but once you achieve them, a sense of completion (and complacency) kicks in - you stop and the weight/inches/laziness come racing back. In addition, with a weight/inch loss target, you feel pressure.
When I shifted my focus to developing a lifestyle of fitness and decided that I would begin and never stop, two things happened: (1) It became easy and (2) it became fun! The pressure was gone and exercise became something that I did, not something that I had to do.
Along with the mind-shift is the discipline. Getting up at 5:15 for an early morning workout 5 days a week was a mind vs. body battle for the first 2-3 months. Then I crossed a threshold, where my body finally understood that my mind rules and it's become a mind-over-body victory. The key is to get up and go (unless you're ill), even when you don't want to and even when you think you have a good reason not to.
While enjoying my new lifestyle habit, 7 months in, I've shed 15kg and 2 dress sizes. I look great and -most importantly- I feel great!
