Ten reasons to love natural hair

1. Not having to take cover at the sight of a rain drop.
2. Being able to jump right into the shower and let water run from the top of your head to the tips of your toes....I hate showercaps
3. Hand in fro disease. Need I say more, playing in your curlies is so joyous.....Don't recommend it though.
4. The deep longing in your gut for a big bodacious afro.......oh what joy!!
5. Understanding such terminologies as TWA, Prepoo and DC
6. Looking forward to weekend just to sit and play with your hair, wash, deep condition and style....Such simplicity but oh so satisfying
7. Loving that you can let your man play in your hair, not scared that he's gonna catch a weave track and your hair smells of yummy tropical coconut and vanilla.
   
8. Appreciating that natural hair is beautiful not matter what length or texture.Natural hair is also very versatile and can be worn wavy, straight or curly.
9. Rocking natural hair shows a true sense of character and self acceptance. Its not easy being the only girl in the club with a huge afro in a sea of weaves and straight hair..but damn it definitely makes you the life of the party..
10. Lastly being able to accessorise your outfit with your hair is certainly fun!!!!

If you were ever scared of taking the leap into being natural, I hope this makes you think twice

The trendy women are going natural, this was the opening line of an article in the Sunday Nation Newspaper in the Buzz section of the paper (July 18th, 2010). Upon looking at the front page I was actually looking forward to reading the article. Shock, Horror, Disbelief!!A local Kenyan "celebrity" with as my family have described it a head with a chickens comb meant to represent a mohawk. No offence to the "celebrity" in question. But in no way does a plastic, red coloured weave represent the awesomeness that is natural hair.

This post is in no way out to rant and or hate on any people out there. I am just saddened by how much ignorance there is on natural hair in my beloved country . I will go into the points that I disagreed and agreed with in the article.

• It is true especially in the African context that natural hair especially dreadlocks can translate to one being a liberal. However this school of thought is slowly being forgotten.
• Creamy crack not white crack. Nuff said
• I think stating that Natural hair had an unsophisticated image is not right and I am here to prove that that is not the case at all.....Help me ladies
• This is a shocker!!! This statement was just ridiculous, Clip ons and extensions that imitate afro hair grow more common and acceptable. Dumbfounded..ladies please try explain what exactly this journalist is trying to put across
• Afro hair can be curled with a gel, gather sheen with a hair polish. By the time I got to this part of the article I was fuming.

To the author of the article, I shall not name any names. Please try and do your research and give useful information for any naturals- to- be out there. You have an amazing platform i.e. The Sunday Nation which could be used to make young girls/women across the country love and appreciate the hair that sprouts out of their scalp as well as an educational tool for mothers who are about to slap some scalp rotting relaxers on their babies heads. I do appreciate your attempt at making natural hair cool though.

My BIG FRO goals... top 10 countdown

Good morning and good day!

I hope you've all been great, sorry for the silence; it's been hectic and insanely busy for both myself and Nyachomba. But you know we've missed you sourly! Nice to be back!

Today on my way to work I came up with a list of things I will do to celebrate my hair once it attains that BIG ASS FRO measure... this is a vain, in your face, silly and will definitely do list! So go on, indulge in my simple dreamy pleasures of anticipated long natural hair... I'm talking mid back length all the way to waist length. Someday....

10. I will tie my natural unstretched hair in a low near neck ponypuff.. I know this may seem trivial, but maaan, I can't wait till I'm able to do that

9. I will flip my curly tresses at every possible occasion.. when someone calls my name, when I'm trying to make a point, in my sleep, when I get out of a swimming pool all seductive, when I eat, cross the road... the list is endless

8. I will purposely stretch out my fro when I go to the movies... hehehehee

7. I will rock two strand twists in every look and style... I LOVE medium sized two strand twists on long thick hair, I think they look so beautiful *sigh*

6. I will rock a side swept bang. I can't wait for the day my hair has enough length and weight to flow downwards

5. I will ponypuff punch all the haters who told me that African hair can't grow as I turn and walk away... POW! take that haterz!

4. I will stand and enjoy the sensation of a breeze flowing and fluffing my hair all about

3. I will continue to care and grow my hair... let's see how far this hair will go, 5-10 years down the line

2. I MIGHT just consider getting sister locks done! I adore them! Then I'll pony whip all the other haters who still don't believe black hair can grow

1. I will continue to praise and thank God for making me a proud and beautiful black woman :)
