Nyachomba's Regimen

Hi all,

I just wanted to post on my regimen and what has really helped my hair and kept it healthy. This is what works for me and may or may not work for others. I have used all manner of products and the ones in my regimen are also what work for me.

Cleansing/Clarifying/Washing
One a Month

I prepoo (look into hair lingo) with olive oil by saturating my hair with olive oil, giving myself a 5 minute massage as I do this, then put a shower cap on and leave it on overnight.

Shampoo with diluted Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Shampoo in 4 braids or twists so as to concentrate on the scalp rather than hair.

Bi Monthly

Due to the dust in Nairobi I either ACV rinse or Use baking soda on my hair to clean it

Weekly
I co wash upto 3 times a week in the shower. This keeps my hair and scalp clean without stripping my hair of its natural oils. I mainly use Alberto Balsam or Enliven Coconut and Vanilla for my co washes

Leave In
Every time I wash or co wash my hair I use a leave in. This can either be Herbal Essences Hello Hydration conditioner, Organics Olive Oil leave in, Organics Tea Tree cholesterol

Deep Conditioner
I deep condition weekly (45min-2hours) with the either of the following;
ORS Replenishing pak
Organics Tea Tree with a tbsp of olive oil
Olive oil mixed with honey
Olive oil and coconut milk

Henna
I use henna for my hair for both its colour and also for its strengthening abilities. I use this bi monthly

Moisture
For my daily moisturising I use mainly my glycerin, water and conditioner mix with some essential oils. I then seal with whatever oil or butter is on hand mainly coconut, olive, castor, vatika, or my handmade shea butter mix.

If you have any comment or questions feel free to ask. Mary and I shall talk about all of the products and procedures talked about in this post.

  1. Great that you two have put up your regimens to help someone like me who missed out on some of the steps.
I'm with you on the once a month wash. But where i start to stray is where you co wash 3 times or once a week like Mary does. The co wash gets rid of dirt right??? but at the same time retains the hair's moisture. My hair is a soldier considering i haven't done the co washing you girls have mentioned.
The treatment or conditioning i haven't done either. I shall be on my hair tomorrow coz wow i feel rather left behind by this train with the hair regimen.
And the mix of olive oil and honey that doesn't get sticky?? oh how do you mix them a handful of olive oil with a table spoon of honey??
I'm printing your regimen and Mary's. I need to study them closey and come up with questions.
Will inform you on how the hair will be after the co wash, deep conditioning, leave in and sealing my hair.
Its ok if i do the regimen in that order or not??
Sorry i'm at it again with my one hundred questions :-)

  2. Voe

Yeah we wanted to show what works for us. Yeah the once a month wash is good...low shampooing is ideal for our kind of hair. Co washing is very good coz as you know in Nairobi it gets very dusty so hair does not stay clean for long so if you can co wash often it cleans the scalp and the hair.

Treatment and deep conditioning is paramount!!!!you have to deep condition as in its the ultimate commandment. I dont measure out my ingredients just work as I go along. I just make sure to put more olive oil than honey to make sure its not sticky.

Dont apologise for the questions we love them. Follow the commandments to the letter and You will LOVE your hair.

  3. Hi Mary and Nyachomaba! Thank you so much for this blog. Absolutely life-saver!!! I have been so disheartened since I tried going afro like a onth or so ago that I'm contemplating going back to permed hair. Really silly question...exactly what is this "co-washing" that you guys always make reference to?? Also not sure what you mean when you say ACV rinse....sorry, I'm abit behind with the hair lingo

  4. Hi Anon, thanks for the comment.
Don't lose hope! It can be a little tricky at first but you will get the hang it :)

Co-washing is simply washing your hair with a regular moisturizing conditioner in the place of a shampoo. We do not like shampoo (and neither does our hair). Co-washing is a great way to infuse much needed moisture into our hair.

ACV - Apple Cider Vinegar - Do an ACV rinse when you want to remove product build up from your hair. It is a fine substitute for shampoo.

I hope this helps! happy hair growing :)

  5. VERY HELPFUL! So with this ACV rinse....do you just put a particular measure of the ACV into a bucket of water and rinse out your hair or exactly how do you go about it??...Again apologies for my naivety with the afro-care

  6. @ACVanon, No need for apologies..natural hair care can be a minefield...ACV rinses should be done with 4 parts water to 1 part apple cider vinegar...then dump over ure head...massage in for about 5mins then rinse with cool water

Query, I find that my hair still looks and feels dry even after moisturizing(under warm running water), conditioning and sealing in with Olive Oil daily. Any ideas why??
