Mary's Regimen

Howdy.

So we thought we would put up our hair care regimens that specifically work for our hair. My hair type is 4b, and consequently i have to moisturize a whole lot more than 3b or 3c hair types. so if you have curls similar to mine (i.e. tightly woven curl pattern) maybe this could be of some guidance for you...

Cleansing/ washing
One a Month

In order to retain as MUCH moisture as possible, I spritz my hair with my water gycerine mix, then I do a prepoo with a mix of olive and castor oil. I leave this on under a shower cap for about half a day.

I shampoo with ORS Uplifting Shampoo. I always dilute it because it is very drying due to the high sulphate level; and like i said, i need all the moisture i can get. I concentrate on the scalp rather than hair. I DO NOT do double shampoos, only one intense scalp cleansing. This shampoo is great because it really works on the scalp (healthy scalp healthy hair)

Bi- Monthly
I begin with a co-wash, after that I either ACV rinse or Use diluted baking soda to remove dirt and conditioner build-up. This is my last step after the deep condition, (i found that it leaves my hair super soft and removes the build-up of conditioner from weeks of heavy conditioning)

Weekly
I co-wash no less than 3 times a week, with Enliven Coconut and vanilla conditioner or Clear Essences Hello Hydration Conditioner (which i use as a leave in for my wash-and-go days).

Leave In
After a wash, or co-wash i use either Herbal Essences Hello Hydration conditioner, Organics Olive Oil leave in, Organics Tea Tree cholesterol, or Infusium23

Deep Conditioner
Nyash taught me how to deep condition; I follow her regimen and i have found it really works for my hair! So;
I deep condition weekly (45min-2hours) with the either of the following;
ORS Replenishing pak (I LOVE THIS PRODUCT) i mix it with coconut or olive oil
Organics Tea Tree with a tbsp of olive oil
Olive oil mixed with honey
Olive oil and coconut milk

Henna
I LOVE henna! it can be drying for 4b hair if not managed well, BUT! i love the color it leaves and it also loosens my curl pattern. Ideally it should be done bi-weekly. After a henna session i always do a deep condition.

Moisture
I take my moisture SERIOUSLY! I finally found a method that leaves my hair super soft;
I spritz my hair with the water, glycerin, condish, olive oil and essential oil mix... i then part my hair into four sections and proceed to seal with castor oil AND on top of that, i add a bit of shea butter on my tips. Super soft i tell you!

REGARDS!
Mary

  1. hey, so what do you do to avoid the drying effect of the henna? and how long after a treatment does the loosened curl pattern thing last? and do you mean you use it twice a week or every 2 weeks coz from what i've read about henna it can leave a lot of buildup in addition to the whole drying thing so i'm surprised that you'd dare do it twice a week!! but yeah, i've also heard that it strengthens the hair which of course helps it retain length. is that your experience?

  2. Hey Faith,

    Well to avoid the drying effects of henna you can add some oil e.g olive to your henna mixture and also you have to deep condition after you do youe henna.thats why mary said she deep conditions after henna.
    The loosening effects take like 3 or 4 henna appliations. I normally henna twice a month and I have definitely noticed the loosening effects. The reasons I henna is due to thickness my hair is very fine but henna has slowly made it thicker.
    It sure does strengthen hair and can be a breakage preventor lol
    Henna does not have build up its just penetrates the strands. We shall be doing a henna post very soon

  3. Oh what does BC and Bi-monthly mean??? Is Bi-monthly twice a month?? I'm guessing here.
    And why do you do clean your hair with ACV rinse after your deep conditioning??? Shouldn't that be done before the deep conditioing???

  4. Hey,

    please help me understand what you mean by natural hair? Is it hair that grow on our heads? or is it hair that grows on our heads and is not subjected to any chemical treatment including shampoo washes etc or is it any hair that is not a wig, weave etc? I cant seem to get a clear defination from the blog.

    thanks,

    Moss.

  5. Dear Moss,
    Thanks for the comment, Natural hair is that that has not been subjected to any chemical manipulation such as relaxers or texturisers that alter the texture of your hair by completely straightening the hair or loosening the curls.Shampoo washes and treatments are chemicals but they do not alter the state of your hair like a relaxer. A wig/ weave in my opinion is obviously not natural but some naturals use these for protective styling.

  6. Hi Mary and Nyash,
    Just started treating my hair with the respect and care it deserves but there are so many products out there and I don't want to become a product junkie. Which products would u recommend in terms of shampoo, leave in conditioner n henna. Plus I was curious as to what brand to buy of oils, both essential and just the kawaidaz. I saw castor oil n almond oil by Ideal, and there are so many brands of glycerin. Please help because I don't want to risk causing damage to my already sensitive scalp. Love your blog cause I can find out where to buy products locally and find inspiration and motivation on this journey. Thanks
